CARLOS VELA GETS MATCH WINNER FOR SOCIEDAD

Real Sociedad trounced Real Betis 1-0 in the La Liga with Carlos Vela scoring the only goal of the match.

The victory becomes the third for Betis in the League. A poor back pass from Inigo Martinez almost allowed the visitors go up early in the game but Sociedad goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli was alert. The hosts made a serious attempt nine minutes to the short recess as Willian Jose headed an Asler Illarramendi’s cross. Antonio Adan stopped the goal-bound effort by making a one-handed save.

Alex Alegria took a shot from outside the box, but Rulli ensured it posed no real danger. After the break, Carlos Vela broke the deadlock when he scored from a Mikel Oyarzabal low cross. The goal becomes his second in three matches. Alegria had to save another attempt of Rulli’s four minutes later. Adan on the other hand, had to be alert to deny David Zurutuza and Oyarzabal in the closing minutes of the game.

Sociedad would be very happy with the score line as it means a back to back home victory – the first since February this year. Both sides remain at the middle of the standings after the game. After the international break, both sides are poised to face difficult oppotions. Real Betis would host a hungry Real Madrid side, while Sociedad would visit Basque County rival Athletic Bilbao.

“We wanted to show that we are strong at home, and the three points are staying here,” Sociedad’s Hector Hernandez said. “We didn’t play well. We tried to keep the ball in the first half. Seeing we couldn’t, we then tried to be more direct, but it was more with our hearts than our head,” Adan said after the game with Betis truly chasing the ball most of the game.
