Carlos Vela Sets New MLS Record with Hat-Trick

Carlos Vela proved that he is the greatest scorer in the MLS after managing to set a new record of goals in a single campaign. LAFC managed to beat Colorado Rapids 3-1 at the Banc of California Stadium. The game witnessed the club and player both registering even further in record books. LAFC were able to finish the campaign with 72 points, which is one more than their previousrecord. The team has also been able to finish the regular season with a 48+ goal difference, which is also the best. The three goals scored against Colorado Rapids make it 85 for the campaign and it equals the MLS record.

The victory was possible thanks to Carlos Vela’s hat-trick, which has also the record for goals from an individual in a single campaign. The Mexican striker now has scored 34 goals. However, LAFC will be taking these records with a pinch of salt considering that such regular season records have not yielded results in the postseason. For example, New York Red Bulls or the 1998 LA Galaxy outfit were unable to reach the MLS Cup final. In fact, games that have finished the regular season with a record have gone on to win the trophy three times since 2003.

The most points in history is really important because we showed how good we are. But we want more. If we don’t win the MLS Cup then the record is nothing so we have to keep working.Starting tomorrow we have to think about the playoff [game] and be ready,” said defender Beitashour. Vela has finished the campaign with 34 goals in just 31 games. In fact, Vela has scored more goals than FC Cincinnati have scored as a team. The former Arsenal striker ranks as a favourite to win the MVP award.
